What Scar Camouflage Actually Involves

Camouflage pigment on a scar that is still changing colour and texture on its own won't hold predictably.

Flat, pale or lighter-than-surrounding-skin scars respond best. That includes many surgical scars, old injury marks and areas of skin discolouration. Some hypertrophic scars, the slightly raised but stable kind, can also be treated once they've settled.

Keloid scars are not treated with camouflage. Keloids can keep growing, and pigment placed into unstable, still-changing tissue doesn't hold its colour or shape reliably. If you have a keloid, Dr. Mavleen will talk through other options rather than proceed with camouflage on it.

A few other things rule someone out for now rather than forever: active skin infections or irritation in the area, uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune conditions in a flare, and pregnancy. Blood thinners need clearance from your treating doctor first, since they affect how the pigment sits and how the area heals. None of this is about doubting your reasons for wanting the treatment. It's about the pigment actually lasting once it's in.

Results typically hold for two to five years before a touch-up is needed, depending on skin type and sun exposure.
