Hair grows in cycles — active growth, transition and rest. Laser only works on hair currently in the active growth phase, which is why a single session never gets everything.

The light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair shaft, travels down to the follicle, and heats it enough to disable future growth. The skin around the follicle is left untouched because modern lasers are wavelength-specific.

Across 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, the majority of hair in the treated area becomes permanently finer, lighter or absent.

On the day of treatment, the area is shaved (not waxed or plucked — the hair root needs to be present). A cooling gel is applied, and the laser is moved over the skin in overlapping passes.

The sensation is a quick warm snap, like a small rubber band against the skin. Most patients tolerate it without any anaesthetic. A face session takes 15–20 minutes. Legs or back can take 45–60 minutes.

Skin is mildly pink for a few hours afterwards, similar to a brief sun warmth. You can drive yourself home, return to work, and resume normal activity the same day, avoiding direct sun for 48 hours.

Laser hair reduction works on pigmented hair against contrasting skin. It works less well on grey, white, blonde or very fine red hair because there is not enough melanin to absorb the light.

We do not perform laser on patients who are pregnant, on active accutane (six month wait after stopping), with a recent suntan, or with active skin infections in the area.
